COMMUNITY PROJECTS
Littleton, New Hampshire - IMAGES # 1 TO 3
The town of Littleton, New Hampshire received a grant from the New
Hampshire State Council on the Arts to explore the possibilities of a
public sculpture for their downtown. I met with a number of groups and
talked with organizations throughout the town. We developed a variety of
themes that reflected the history of Littleton and the aspirations of
its people. I presented four sculpture designs to the
community in the grand hall of the Littleton Opera House.
The first design was for the Saranac Glove Company, which made the best
deer skin gloves in the world. My design was to create a giant pair of
their signature glove in bronze. They rested on top of a pedestal of
granite emblazoned with the family names of the workers who made those
gloves for over a hundred years.
The next design was a large stone fountain for Pike Industries, a local
company that for as long as anyone could remember, made scythe stones in
a mill by the river. This design includes a large bronze version of the
company’s logo, which was a pike with a scythe STONE in its mouth Within a torrent
of water. The family names of workers would be carved on the base of the
seating area around the fountain.
The third design was for the Kilburn Stereoscopic Slide Company which
was the premier stereoscopic slide manufacturer in the world. My design
was to create a large bronze stereoscopic slide viewer on a
stone-viewing pedestal, which overlooks the river and mountains to the
east and across the river to view the building that housed the company
through the end of the nineteenth century.
The design that was chosen, emerged during a conversation at the
Littleton Historical Society, when it was mentioned that Eleanor
Hodgeman Porter, the woman who wrote the very popular novel “
Pollyanna”, grew up in Littleton and that many have thought that Glad
town in the novel, is indeed, the town of Littleton. With this sculpture
I have tried to express the exuberance and positive attitude of
Pollyanna in one all-inclusive gesture of acceptance. The bronze figure
stands in the center of town, upon a circular granite base, in front of
the town library..
